Careful Judgment

The night of the 6th of January, 2021 will be remembered as one of the most tragic days in the political history of the United States and perhaps in the history of the United States.

President Trump either intentionally or by total lack of understanding made every possible mistake to compromise not only the interest of the United States but the interest of Donald Trump.

However, at this time of chaos, we must be very careful to judge people and to judge events objectively and not emotionally.

This morning, I was watching a program on CNN where the participants frantically – and many a times – justly so attacked anybody who is associated with the president. Those four individuals who resigned last night were no exception. One of the participants in the debate on the program suggested that those resigning last night did it too late, that they should have done it months ago.

This is a wrong judgment. Until last night notwithstanding every error the president made, he did not reach a criminal offence. His presidency will be judged in history. His presidency WAS judged by “His Excellency” the voter in November 2020 election. The majority voted no confidence in the American president. This does not reflect a criminal offence by the President. The violation last night is a different story. The people who resigned served the people of the United States under a man who was legitimately elected as the president of the United States. They resigned when they thought the president was acting in violation of the criminal courts. This is the time they had to resign.

At this very difficult time, every American and everyone who admires America has to carefully judge the events and judge the President. His behaviour might not be popular, his challenging of the election in a court of law might not find favour in the public eye, but it is allowed by law. Those remaining with the President under these circumstances had every right not to jump ship. What changed is the events of last night. This is where President Trump might have committed a serious criminal offence. This is the time when these people needed to leave. And they did. To be a good judge is to judge fairly under very difficult circumstances. To be a good judge is to judge fairly under pressure of emotions. To be a good judge will keep America stable, last night’s tragic events notwithstanding.
