Barbarians at the Gate - October 13th 2000

Barbarians at the Gate

Two Israeli soldiers were slaughtered in Ramallah by a mob. Indeed.

I do not deny that tragedies do occur during a war. The devastating picture of the 12 year old boy in Nezzarim is still a shocking reminder, although we still have to find out what exactly did the boy’s father think by bringing him there.

Some Palestinians have a different approach. They intentionally kill whatever comes about. A whole family in the south, a bus full of schoolchildren in the north, or a baby in a coffee house in Tel Aviv or slaughtering the soldiers and then dipping their hands in the soldiers’ blood.

The lynching of the soldiers mirrors the people we have to negotiate with. These people - and they are not the majority of the Palestinians - have to be converted from animals to human beings. Indeed, the ‘’Rais’’ permits the blowing-up of innocent people. IDF warned even policemen in Ramallah to vacate the house that was to be shelled so they would not be hurt.

Yasser Arafat

The difference between the IDF and Arafat’s mob is that the former tries to avoid civilians, and even uniformed policemen. The chairman’s soldiers aim at just that. He simply fails to understand that if we retaliate against these ‘’Barbarians at the gate’’, ‘’Palestine’’ will not be a state but one big refugee camp.

And the truth has to be told. The Arab leaders [King Abdullah, President Mubarak and others] appreciate that Palestinian violence challenges their own authority and can cause their own downfall. Arafat cares not. He humiliated The Secretary of State in Paris, he will bring down Arab stability in the Middle East. He does not care. The Arab leaders have to wake up to the reality that they are tools in Arafat’s hands. The price they might pay is beyond their capability to endure.

Zalli Jaffe.
