Closure – a punishment? August 10th 1997

Closure – a punishment?

Yassir Arafat claims that the closure of the borders to Palestinians is a collective punishment. Well, it is not.

When Arafat calls for Jihad his people understand it in its true sense. His ''explanations'' in the CNN are false, and do not reach the Arabs in Gaza or Ramallah.

When Arabs and Jews alike hear the war slogans from Arafat, when one of his top senior officials burns the Israeli flag, when in Arab demonstrations slogans ''promising'' blood are heard, when Hammas activists with blood on their hands and who were supposed to have been arrested by Palestinian police lead – in front of TV cameras – anti Israeli demonstrations, we, in Israel have the right to assume that we cannot rely on Arafat for our defense. We have to protect ourselves from any risks. The protection calls inter alia for the closure of the borders. True, workers cannot come in, but neither can murderers who were supposed to have been arrested but walk freely, encouraged by Arafat’s call for Jihad. With all fairness, ''our'' blood is more important than ''their'' income.

We are not punishing the Palestinians. We are protecting the Israeli’s.

Zalli Jaffe.
