Letter to The Times - March 30th 2001

Letter to the editors,
The Times,

I am referring to the new initiative of President Mubarak and King Abdullah in the Middle East.

The most dangerous element in every conflict is to mislead yourself. History will confirm that it was the PLO who has promoted terrorism worldwide to a scale never known before. They have supported all terrorism groups in Europe [in Northern Ireland – The IRA, in Germany – The Bider Minhoff, in Italy The Red Bridge, and in Japan.].

Notwithstanding Arafat’s agreement to the contrary, his own people are involved in terrorism now in the Middle East. It is not only Israel’s version, as the same was substantiated by President Bush and his Secretary of State.

King Abdullah of Jordan

It should be recognized that the PLO threatens The Hashemite Kingdom, as he can attract the Palestinians residing in Jordan against The Kingdom. Extremism in Egypt [The Muslim Brotherhood] will only be happy to renew violence with the ''Palestinian excuse''. The Arab world knows that Arafat is not a friend but a threat to stability, and if the Arab leaders do not restrict his activities against Israel, it will be only a question of time before the PLO will look again to Jordan [Black September], supporting Iraq against Kuwait, or causing once again the collapse in Lebanon.

It is very convenient to accuse Israel for everything. The world should recognize the fact that the only agenda that unites the Arab world is Israel, and when this matter is resolved the stability of the Arab world will be unresolved.

Let the Arab leaders deliver a courageous message to Arafat, that he does not have ''a blank check''. Only this way will they save – not the peace process – but the stability of their regimes.

When the PLO realizes that, terrorism will decrease.

Secretary of State James Baker said after the Gulf War that the PLO’s behavior should not be forgotten. Let us keep it that way.

Zalli Jaffe,
Jerusalem.
