Drugs and other Advantages - The Financial Times - July 15th 2001

Drugs and other Advantages
Letter to The Financial Times

The House of Commons was invited to debate the granting of permission to use marijuana ''over the counter''. I believe England should ask itself the following questions:

Did we assume that marijuana is healthy? Contributes to the individual? Has no side effects? If so, we could conclude that England is advancing in this matter, and we all would be proud of the latest development and contribution to society.

Alas, if we should assume, as we should, that the reason the House of Parliament was invited to permit the usage of marijuana is because the law enforcement agencies cannot fight this plague; that society cannot prevent the addiction, then before the House of Parliament makes a decision, it should face the mirror and declare that England has failed. Society is not advancing, but retreating; surrendering to a weakness in society which will result in irreversible damage to the body and spirit of the individual and to society at large.

The challenge is not only in the drug itself, but the atmosphere in England is retreating. The age of drinking and smoking is younger every year. Crime advances, and The House of Parliament should not contribute to this phenomenon. Let the elected individuals of the United Kingdom put a stop to this deterioration. Say No To Drugs today, thus keeping England healthy tomorrow.

Sincerely yours,

Zalli Jaffe, Jerusalem.
