Letter to the Sunday Times - Cook's Visit - March 19th 1998

Letter to the Sunday Times March 1998

Dear Sir;

Mr. Cook’s visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority was a first step in the EC’s new President’s efforts to contribute to the peace process in the Middle East. The basic principle of such a contribution impartiality.

Jerusalem is the most sensitive subject to be attended to by the Jews and Palestinians. Mr. Cook’s bizarre behavior in his visit in Jerusalem, demonstrated total lack of experience, no sense of diplomacy and worst of all, questioned his fairness and credibility.

He paid his respect to the Arabs killed at Dir-Ya-Sin, but did not visit the Holocaust memorial of Yad Vashem. He made the Minister of Defense wait for him for 45 minutes, and his visit to Har Homa was done in a manner with intention to humiliate Israel. He ''knew'' how to condemn Israel about building in Har Homa, ''forgetting'' – of course – to condemn the Palestinians for their massive half buildings in Jerusalem.

Robin Cook

His visit against all arrangements with the Foreign Office converted Mr. Cook from a dignified foreign minister to a common demonstrator seeking publicity.

Israel cannot entrust its future to people who behave in a manner they themselves would consider outrages if reciprocated. It is not the dinner with Mr. Netanyahu he lost, but his position as a fair broker, and the confidence of a party to the dispute. Mr. Cook – in his visit – wanted to demonstrate that he is to be trusted as a non-partial negotiator and a dignified diplomat. He is neither. Frankly, England deserves better.

Zalli Jaffe.
