Rabin, Churchill or Chamberlain?

Rabin, Churchill or Chamberlain?

The Americans and the Israelis share inter alia strong armies but bad diplomacy. Since the end of the Second World War, the USA failed in most diplomatic missions they have undertaken. Lord Allen Bullock emphasizes on the embracing conclusion of the Second World War, when all of Poland became a Russian Satellite [more then was offered in the Molotov – Ribbentrop agreement]; Barbara Tuchman suggests the confusion in the department of state regarding Mao and Deng contributed to the initiation of the Korean War; Paul Johnson accused Kennedy of total lack of understanding during the Cuban crisis; We do not need Kissinger to analyze the conclusions of the Vietnam War; “The rock of Stability” according to President Carter – The Shah of Iran – was overthrown 6 months after that statement was made; The results of the Embassy crises in Tehran demonstrated how crippled US diplomacy is.

Barbara Tuchman

Chamberlain believed Hitler. “Peace in our time” he declared. Czechoslovakia was lost and the road was open for the Second World War.

Notwithstanding past performances, notwithstanding his weaknesses at home, notwithstanding the alarm caused in Jordan, Rabin gave Arafat credit presently unavailable to him even in Washington. If Arafat wins, it will grossly destabilize Jordan where the majority of the populations are Palestinians who will want to merge with “Palestine”. Jericho and Gaza are a guaranteed formula of Palestinian state. The inhabitants of Hebron will expect the same developments as those granted to Jericho. Hammas will fight for its rights, the disputes within the PLO will escalate. Syria will have to be compensated. Rabin will grant it all the Golan Heights.

Israel is going back to the pre-1967 borders, with a volatile shaky Palestinian state next door; whilst Palestinian Arabs in Israel enhance their Palestinian identity.

Rabin wishes to be ‘’Churchill of Peace”. He takes a similar risk taken by Chamberlain. With one difference. Chamberlain risked a faraway country. The Prime Minister of Israel is risking Israel.

Zalli Jaffe.
