Letter To The NY Times - August 21st 2012

Dear Sir,

I, being an Israeli, am stunned with the behavior of the 7 Israelis who attacked the Palestinians. As the police to date did not conclude it's findings, I for one, suggest that we wait. Because the “seems to be” crime is so serious, we also have not to jump to conclusions. Alas, some of us in Israel will take any opportunity to throw mud both at us as Israelis and the government. You quote Nimrod Alonithe head of the Institute for Educational Thought at a Tel Aviv teachers college, said, “this cannot just be an expression of something he has heard at home. This is directly tied to national fundamentalism that is the same as the rhetoric of Neo-Nazis, Taliban and K.K.K….  This comes from an entire culture that has been escalating toward an open and blunt language based on us being the chosen people who are allowed to do whatever we like.” Now, even a self hating Israeli should know his limits. Taliban? Neo-Nasiz? K.K.K?  because of the “national fundamentalism”?  The Palestinians do not contribute to this atmosphere? Mr. Aloni demonstrates total lack of intellectual and academic credibility. It is a shame that his statements attracted the NY times.

Zalli Jaffe.
